There are scores of websites out there that seem committed to show their visitors the exit route as soon as they enter. I present to you a sarcastic account of what you can do to keep visitor traffic at bay.
PDF Files
Load your website with lots and lots of PDF Files. Users will just hate it. Not only do they break the flow but also make difficult simple tasks like printing or saving documents because standard browser commands fail to work. Make the users bid farewell to smooth scrolling as PDF layouts seldom match the size of user’s browser window.
Visited Links
Our task is to make navigation difficult. Don’t care to change the colors of visited links. Let users get all confused ‘cause they’ll have a hard time sorting out pages they have already viewed, that is only if they actually stay to do that.
Non-scannable text
Paste on your website an undecipherable wall of monotonous text. Yes this is the content of the site. Don’t play any documentation tricks and let the users scroll through endless heaps of pages if they want to extract anything.
Font Size
Keep the font size of the text content extremely small so that the users have to strain their eyes and peep onto the screen to make sense. And also make sure you don’t give them an option to resize the text. This would just not go with our aim to keep them away from the site
Page titles
The evil page titles are the ones that attract search engines. And if the search engine ranks your website high in its search results, in all probability there will be visitors thronging your website. And that is certainly not what we want. Is it not?
Make the page titles of your website as far away from sense as you can. If it is a business website, title the page as dog grooming. In no way will anyone find your site then.
Advertisements
It’s all bout money, honey! Bring in all sorts of advertisements and paste it across your website. for if a visitor wants to view the information, it’ll be all fair to make him endure all the flashy blinky graphic ads. Trust me, users wont stay at your ad mad portal for long.
If can be, try designing all the images on your site as though they are ads. Let the visitors take them for ads and read over them! After all we don’t want to share, do we?
New Browser Windows
Ok, so they find something interesting and decide to click on one of the links on your website. Screw their happiness by opening new browser windows each time they click that mouse. New popping windows are the best way to irritate them to the core and make them press the close tab!
Don’t answer
If you have a e-commerce site, make sure you don’t cater to anything the visitors’ queries. And by no means list the prices of your products and commodities. After all why play the saint game when all you want is to do the devil game.
Search Boxes
Make your search boxes overly literal so that it pulls down the usability quotient of the website. Such search boxes are unable to handle typos, plurals, hyphens and other such variants and wouldn’t spare the users any margin of making mistakes.
